Surprise Inside Cake - Hidden Mickey Mouse

Here's another twice baked cake for you. I usually plan the final photo a bit more but on this particular day it was just, "Stick a fork in him, he's done." Poor Mickey.

UPDATE: A few of you have asked for a tutorial but I'm sorry to say I didn't make a complete one for this cake. I live at high altitude or "at altitude" per the specialty cook books so the recipes I use most likely won't work the best for most of you. Here is a brief summary of what I wrote down at the time but you can use your favorite pound cake and frosting recipes and it should turn out just fine.

and here's a link to someone that took a bit more time to document the process a little later on . . . http://www.momfluential.net/2014/03/04/hidden-mickey-cake/

Happy Caking!

Deborah

Hello, What is the yellow on the top of the cake?
Thanks!

Deborah Stauch said...

The yellow is a 2 ingredient buttercream made by melting 1 cup of butter then adding a 12 oz package of Candy Melts. Cool and frost.

Am I over thinking things? How did you put the flat frozen mickey head to form a ring in the pan? Was it multiple heads lined up like stacks of cookies in a round?

Deborah Stauch said...

To make the ring of shapes: take the flat shapes and stand them on end like they'll be in the cake. If you prefer a visual, see the rings of butterflies at: http://once-upon-a-pedestal.blogspot.com/2012/07/hidden-butterflies-inside-another-twice.html.
Hope this helps!

The link you provided says it no longer exists. I really want to make this cake! I think I get the concept, you make the mickey cut outs then do you place them into the red cake batter? Why do you have two separate cake pans?

Deborah Stauch said...

The second pan was just leftover batter.

I'm just curious -- do I have to use a pound cake recipe to make this, or will any cake mix work? If it will only work using pound cake, why? I want to make this cake for my niece, but I was thinking about using different cake mixes than pound... Thank you so much!

Deborah Stauch said...

Katie Peterson - I've had the best luck with pound cake but other cakes including boxed mixes work. Some bakers have had trouble in the past with the shapes floating or sinking in the batter during the second bake but a pound cake seems to eliminate that issue. Try freezing your shapes before adding them to the batter. Hope this helps!

What size pan did you use?

Deborah Stauch said...

The cake was baked in an 8" pan. The smaller pan in the photo was just leftover batter.
